An article in the Montreal daily newspaper La Presse, under the byline of Julien Arsenault, revealed that compensation for five senior executives of Bombardier (TSE-BBD) had risen by 8% in 2017.
As for Bombardier’s CEO, his compensation jumped 12% to US$10.63 million.
In a context where Bombardier was saved from bankruptcy in October 2015 by the injection of $1.3 billion of public funds, and given that the company lost US$553 million in fiscal year 2017, a little restraint on the part of senior management might have been in order, but we know that this has not been the case since the rescue of the company by the Government of Quebec.
In comparison, Boeing (NYSE-BA) CEO Dennis Muilenburg earned US$18.5 million in 2017 for leading a company with sales of more than US$93 billion and net profits of US$8.1 billion.
What increases in compensation and bonuses are available to Bombardier’s senior management for the day the Quebec company returns to profitability?
