Allegiant (NASDAQ: ALGT) today announces an agreement to purchase its 50th Airbus aircraft, an A320, from Airbus Financial Services. The pu rchase marks an important milestone for the company in its long-term transition to an Airbus fleet.
By the end of 2015, the company’s in service Airbus fleet will number 25, consisting of 15 A320s and 10 A319s. The remaining 25 committed Airbus aircraft will be delivered through 2018. The aircraft announced today will enter revenue service in early 2016. Allegiant anticipates adding further aircraft commitments as opportunities for new transactions arise. At the end of this year, Allegiant will have a total of 82 aircraft in revenue service.
“By the end of 2016, Allegiant will be a majority Airbus carrier as measured by available seat miles,” said Jude Bricker, Allegiant Travel Company senior vice president of planning. “This is an exciting milestone for Allegiant having taken delivery of our first Airbus aircraft just in 2013.”
The younger A320 family aircraft will help Allegiant to increase operational efficiency in the coming years. The enhanced opera ting economics of the aircraft will also open up new growth opportunities for the company by making longer routes and off-peak flying profitable. Routes such as Orlando / Sanford to Bismarck, N.D. and Phoenix / Mesa to Fort Wayne, Ind. have been made successful with the introduction of the A320/A319 into the fleet.
“What happens in Vegas is what is happening around the world,” said John Leahy, Airbus chief operating officer — customers. “Allegiant is among the growing ranks of low-cost carriers that appreciate the A320 family as the perfect balance of comfort, economy and efficiency. Allegiant just marked its 50th consecutive profitable quarter and our aircraft in their fleet helped achieve that accomplishment.”
Allegiant’s innovative business model has allowed it to grow from one plane and one route just over a decade ago, to offering access to low-cost flights in over 100 cities nationwide, more than any other domestic low-cost carrier. Allegiant passengers can enjoy unique savings by bundling their air, hotel, car and even activity and attraction reservations together for less.
