Statement by AIA President and CEO David F. Melcher welcoming announcement of President Trump’s “Unified Agenda” detailing the Administration’s deregulation efforts.
Arlington, Va. — The Aerospace Industries Association welcomes the White House announcement unveiling the Administration’s successful “Unified Agenda,” to eliminate excessive regulations, one of the most important issues on AIA’s agenda. Together with comprehensive tax reform – another top AIA objective that appears close to realization – America has an historic opportunity to boost economic growth, enhance our global competitiveness and create new jobs.
AIA has consistently called for streamlining regulation of the aerospace and defense marketplace so that our companies can more effectively enhance the safety of the flying public, sustain American leadership in space, and deliver American and allied forces equipment and technology they need to win. We have submitted numerous recommendations to repeal, replace or modify regulations in response to President Trump’s “Two-for-One” Executive Order – some of which have been adopted – and we sustain a continuous dialogue with senior government leaders to move these and other reforms forward.
Throughout 2017, AIA has called on Congress and the Administration for tax reform that reflects the pro-growth principles of a permanent, more competitive corporate tax rate, transition to a territorial tax system and positive tax changes to encourage repatriation of accrued overseas income. Those key AIA principles are firmly embedded in the recently completed Joint House-Senate Tax Bill conference agreement – and form the backbone of the bill that could come to a vote as soon as next week.
The aerospace and defense industry is the heartbeat of the American economy, employing 2.4 million people in the United States – constituting fully 13% of the U.S. manufacturing base – and boasting a proven track record for creating high-skill, high-wage jobs. AIA looks forward to continuing our work with Congress and the Administration to support regulatory and tax reform efforts that help unleash our industry’s great potential to boost the economy and contribute to America’s strength, security and prosperity.
