Arlington, Va. — More than forty senior leaders from across America’s aerospace and defense sector joined to call on Congressional leaders to finalize FY18 spending levels, repeal or raise the BCA caps, and keep the promises made to America’s military and workforce in a December 1 letter to Capitol Hill.
The letter is part of AIA’s ongoing advocacy and leadership for robust, balanced, and stable spending. “At the heart of AIA’s mission is to advocate for policies and responsible budgets that keep our country strong, bolster our capacity to innovate, and spur American economic growth,” said AIA President and CEO David F. Melcher. “Budget stability unlocks all of those. This letter is another example of the continuing leadership role AIA plays in shaping an environment where the nation is secure and prosperous and where American industry and innovation thrives.”
Leaders from the aerospace and defense supply chain explained the negative effects of final FY18 appropriations without repeal or alteration of the discretionary spending caps, citing that these effects, “could undermine our collective commitment to strengthening military readiness.”
The letter also reiterates concerns that critical non-defense programs ranging from FAA certification programs to NASA STEM initiatives are penalized by sequestration’s arbitrary cuts and the uncertainty accompanying continuing resolutions, stating, “These non-defense programs are vital to our economic prosperity and our ability to maintain a vibrant and robust aerospace and defense industrial base.”
