Arlington, Va. — The Aerospace Industries Association presented Congressman Mike Turner (R-Ohio) with its prestigious Wings of Liberty Award today as part of National Aerospace Week. Congressman Turner was recognized for his many contributions on both the House Armed Services and House Intelligence Committees, as well as his efforts to increase defense funding above the levels specified in the Budget Control Act, resulting in significant relief from harmful budget cuts.
“Congressman Turner is a stalwart advocate for our country’s national security,” said AIA President and CEO David F. Melcher. “His dedication to upholding a robust defense for our nation and expertise in defense and intelligence-related issues have transformed the debate and brought much-needed attention to the state of readiness of our armed forces.”
“Congressman Turner’s passion for aerospace has inspired meaningful and long-lasting change for our industry,” said AIA Chairman Dennis A. Muilenburg, Boeing chairman, president and CEO. “He has been instrumental in advocating for increased defense spending, fighting for the tools and resources our servicemen and women need to complete their missions safely and protect our freedoms around the world. In appreciation of these and other significant contributions, AIA is proud to present Congressman Turner with the Wings of Liberty Award.”
In response to receiving the Wings of Liberty Award, Congressman Turner said, “I am honored to receive this prestigious award. I will continue to fight to repeal the sequestration of national defense and return our military to a state of readiness.” Congressman Turner serves as the Chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Tactical Air and Land Forces.
The Wings of Liberty award is presented annually to a member or members of Congress who made significant contributions to help bolster aerospace and national defense. The award, which embodies the spirit of America and the drive to achieve any dream, was made as part of National Aerospace Week (September 10-16). Past honorees include Senators Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-Texas) and Rep. Norm Dicks (D-Wash.).
