White Plains, NY–Corporate Angel Network’s 49,000th and 49,001st cancer patients departed Baton Rouge, LA on October 27, 2015 for Angleton, TX, a suburb of Houston. On board the flight operated The Dow Chemical Company were 54 year old prostate cancer patient Richard Gremillion, Jr., and his 74 year old father, Richard Gremillion, Sr., who is also being treated for prostate cancer. Both are receiving treatment in Houston.
“After successful surgery in 2011, a recurrence appeared in January 2015,” said Rick Gremillion, Jr. “Chemo started in June of this year and required frequent trips to Houston. With my very first call to CAN, I felt that something special was about to happen and it sure has! Everyone has been extremely nice and accommodating and knowing that I would be home in just a few hours after treatment is a huge stress relief. My father, Richard Gremillion, Sr., is participating in a clinical trial and also travels with CAN.
Dow was one of the first companies to offer flights to cancer patients through CAN, starting in 1983.
“Dow’s partnership with CAN allows us to make a real difference for thousands of people – often a life-saving difference,” said Rob Vallentine, director global citizenship and President, The Dow Chemical Company Foundation. “Dow people are driven to help build stronger, more sustainable communities, and this is one of the most important ways we are able to do that.”
About Corporate Angel Network
Based at Westchester County Airport, Corporate Angel Network arranges free transportation for cancer patients to specialized treatment by using the empty seats on corporate jets already flying to the desired destinations. Since its first flight in 1981 and thanks to the generosity of business aviation, CAN, a 501(c)(3) organization with Public Charity status, has provided 49,000 flights to adults and children whose best treatment options are often thousands of miles from home. Thirty volunteers along with a small staff coordinate the medical travel needs of cancer patients with the scheduled flight activity of more than 500 participating corporations (including half the Fortune 100) resulting in more than 225 patient flights each month. The organization has received numerous awards in recognition of its service to cancer patients including The Volunteer Action Award, the highest volunteer award from the President of the United States.
